Two shadows, two different causes

A home photo that fails on lighting nearly always carries one of two shadows, and they have separate fixes. The first sits on the background: a dark crescent beside your head, or an outline of your shoulders on the wall. That comes from standing too close to the wall, and the cure is distance. The second sits on your face: a band under the nose, a wedge under the chin, one cheek darker than the other, or eye sockets gone black. That comes from light arriving from too high and from too small a source, and the cure is to lower the light and make it bigger.

Work out which one you have first. Stepping away from the wall does nothing for a chin shadow, and a second lamp does nothing for a silhouette printed on the plaster behind you.

What the authorities actually say

Shadows are written into the published requirements, usually alongside the background rule.

The Dutch rule goes furthest, asking for lighting that is even across the background too: a wall bright on one side and dim on the other can fail with no recognisable shadow on it.

The shadow behind your head

Stand with your back against a wall and you are, optically, part of the wall. Light that reaches you also reaches the plaster a few centimetres behind you, so whatever your head blocks lands as a hard shape immediately beside it, with no distance to spread out over and no room for light to fill it in from the sides.

Distance solves it geometrically. Step a metre away and the shadow falls a metre further back and lower down, usually below the shoulders and outside a passport crop. It softens too, because light from the room's other surfaces now has an angle to arrive from. Half a metre is the minimum worth trying; a metre or more is better.

If the room will not give you a metre, light the wall separately: aim a lamp at it from one side, well away from you, so the background has its own source. Which wall to use is a per-country decision — see background colour and the background checker.

The shadow you will not see on a phone screen

A shadow on cream or light grey is low-contrast, and a phone at outdoor brightness flattens it out of view. Review the frame full size on the largest screen you have, looking at the wall beside the head rather than at your face.

The shadow under the nose and chin

Shadows on the face come down to two independent properties of the light.

Height. The higher above your eye line the source sits, the further the nose and brow throw shadows downwards. A light at roughly face height throws almost nothing under the nose; the same light a metre higher throws a band across the top lip and a wedge under the jaw.

Size. A small source — a bare bulb, a phone-sized LED panel, a flash tube — makes shadows with knife edges, because the light arrives from effectively one point. A large source makes soft-edged shadows, because light arrives from many angles and wraps around the nose and chin. What counts is size as seen from where you stand: a window two metres away is enormous, the same window ten metres away a small bright rectangle. The fix is those two properties — bring the light down to face height, and make it as large as you can.

Why on-camera flash is the worst option

Built-in flash fails on both properties at once. It is tiny, so its shadows have hard edges. It sits alongside the lens, so it fires along the camera's own axis and every shadow it makes lands directly behind the subject — which, if you are near the wall, is a crisp outline of your head on the background. It also overwhelms the room, replacing whatever even light you had with one hard source.

Then there is reflection. The Dutch matrix names it: no "white spots" on the face caused by flash light, with shiny skin, perspiration, glasses and jewellery listed as causes. GOV.UK requires that if you wear glasses, your eyes are not covered by frames, glare, reflection or shadow, and a frontal flash is the surest way to put a white disc on each lens — most of the trouble with glasses. Turn it off, "auto" included.

Why the ceiling light blackens your eyes

A ceiling fixture is the extreme case of a high, small source. It sits directly above you, so the brow ridge shades the eyes and the sockets read as dark hollows. The Dutch requirements single this out: no shadow formation on the face, and in particular around the eyes. That is a serious failure rather than a cosmetic one, because the eyes are what facial recognition measures from.

The same fixture puts a hard line under the nose and jaw, and a pool of shadow on the neck. Switching it off and opening the curtains usually improves a passport photo more than any other single change.

Three setups that work

One window at face height

The most reliable indoor light most people own. Face the window straight on, close enough that it fills a large part of your view, with the wall behind you. The source is broad and level with your face, so it wraps around the nose and chin instead of carving under them, and lands evenly on the background. Use daylight with no direct sun in it: sunlight is a small hard source again, and makes people squint.

Two lamps at 45 degrees

Place two identical lamps left and right, each about 45 degrees off the line between you and the camera, at roughly face height. Each fills the shadow the other creates, which is what makes the pair work: the arrangement removes shadows by cancelling them, not by being bright. Both bulbs must be the same colour temperature — mixing a warm bulb with a cool one tints one side of your face and one side of the wall, and the repair for that is a colour correction, on Canada's list. Bounce each lamp off white card if you can, to enlarge the source.

One light plus a bounce

With a single usable source, put white card, a white towel or an opened laptop lid on the dark side of your face, close in and just out of frame. It returns light into the shadow, and fixes the one-cheek-darker frame without a second lamp.

For a baby, forget the lamps

Lighting a small child from two sides is not realistic. Lay them on a plain light sheet in a well-lit room, away from any window casting a hard patch, and shoot from directly above so the sheet is the background. More in the baby guide.

Checking your own photo for it

Go through the photo at full size, in a fixed order.

  1. The wall either side of the head. Compare the background left of your hair with the background right of it. If one is darker, you have a shadow or an unevenly lit wall, and both fail the same rule.
  2. Under the nose and lower lip. A dark band means the light is too high.
  3. The eye sockets. If you cannot see the iris clearly in both eyes, the source is above you.
  4. One cheek against the other. Cover half the face with your hand, then the other half. A difference you can see this way is one a checker can measure.
  5. Convert it to greyscale if your viewer allows it. Removing colour makes brightness differences far more obvious, on faces and on cream walls alike.

Why you cannot brighten it away afterwards

The obvious repair is a brightness or shadow-lift slider, and it is exactly what the rules close off. Canada names brightness, contrast, colour and sharpness corrections on its zero-tolerance list. GOV.UK requires the photo to be unaltered by computer software. The State Department instructs applicants not to change the photo with software, filters or artificial intelligence, and says it checks photos for AI use — the full picture is in the editing and AI ban.

It does visible damage as well: lifting a dark socket brings noise up with the brightness, flattens skin into a grey wash, and leaves a halo where the algorithm decided the shadow ended. Reshooting takes two minutes once the lamp is in the right place, and it is the only route that survives the rules above.
